Learning from World-Class Mobility (Tentative September 21–24, 2026)
The Smart City Mobility Council facilitates knowledge transfer and networking between public-sector leaders, practitioners, and best-practice firms.
From September 21–24, 2026, we will visit the Netherlands again to explore what is widely regarded as one of the best, most people-centric mobility systems in the world.
“I’ve been attending conferences and professional events in the United States and abroad for 26 years now. This event in the Netherlands was by far the best.” – Yanni Demitri, Director of Public Works / City Engineer, Culver City, California

Over four days, participants will meet with government leaders, practitioners, researchers, and innovative firms to see how multimodal mobility is planned, implemented, and operated in practice – not in a conference room, but on the street, in control centers, and in the neighborhoods they serve.
The focus is operational and practical: what works, why it works, how it is funded, and what can realistically be transferred to states, cities, transportation and transit agencies in North America.
“As we rethink transit and transportation, this trip [Sept. ’23] provided not only a great overview of proven approaches but also real-world examples and conversations with practitioners. It brought a valuable perspective to the conversation in California.” – Mark Tollefson, Undersecretary of Transportation to California State
The program includes all the facets: Policy, implementation & operation. Activities include master classes to discuss how Dutch and Nordic cities tackle mobility and smart city, facilitated by city officials.
Presentation from the Dutch Road Authority, City of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht, as well as though-leading companies such as Dutch Cycling Embassy, Technolution, Mobycon, TNO/Scenexis and GoudAppel.
An overview of the latest research in The Netherlands and Europe (e.g., TU Delft professor), site visits to an operational traffic control center.
